When a USB device is need a quick discussion regarding the value of labour and parts should take place. It is inaccurate or misleading to say as the information "is not stored on an SD card or something" implying that without that partition the command r functionality is lost for most or all systems without a hard drive. The reality is that the majority of deployed Intel based Macs have this feature active, and while the model the OP is working with spans the transition period there is minimal downside to using this as a starting point, and if it does not work moving to more labour intensive steps like the creating of a USB device. I'm not disputing there is also a recovery partition, in fact a key part of how the Internet Recovery works by creating the recovery partition, then running the install. I have not observed a speed difference when downloading it on the impacted system vs. My USB "tech drive" also has multiple OS versions installed and has multiple Recovery HD's all on the same physical disk.Īt modern Internet speeds a download of a few gigs is a few minutes. When I Option boot that machines I get six available volumes to boot from. You can have multiples Recovery partitions available in a single Mac as well, for instance the 2010 Mac Pro I use for testing has four hard drives with three versions of OS X / macOS and each one has it's own appropriate Recovery volume available.

Just open terminal and run diskutil list and you'll see the "Recovery HD" right there alongside "Macintosh HD" on the same physical disk. Internet Recovery is different then the standard Recovery Partition and can function without a drive installed, but only on certain newer Macs (which we don't know if the OP has). Installing a new drive and using command R to install the OS is the standard way we've been refreshing our systems. I don't believe that is true for all models. The recovery partition that allows you to boot using CMD R resides on the hard drive.
